Yudhoyono’s popularity continues to go down: LSI

The Indonesian Survey Institute (LSI) has found in its latest study that even though the popularity of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is on the decline, he remains far more popular than the two other candidates.

The survey, conducted from June 15 to 20, found 67.2 percent of respondents siding with Yudhoyono, 15.8 percent going for Megawati Soekarnoputri, 8.3 percent choosing Vice President Jusuf Kalla, and 8.7 percent undecided.

“We polled 2,000 people in 17 provinces to monitor their responses to presidential and vice presidential candidates,” LSI senior researcher Saiful Mujani said Wednesday at a press conference in Jakarta.

The incumbent’s popularity was lower than the 71 percent the LSI had given him in its May survey. Megawati got 16 percent and Kalla 6 percent in the earlier survey.

In the LSI’s April survey, Yudhoyono obtained 75 percent, Megawati 16 percent and Kalla only 3 percent.

Saiful said Kalla’s popularity was on the rise due to his intensive campaigning and variety of content in his campaign ads, which endeared him more to the public.

However, he pointed out that even with waning popularity, Yudhoyono’s lead over the others was virtually insurmountable, given that polling day was less than two weeks away.

He also stressed the survey was not a real reflection of the presidential election result, but only meant to give the campaign teams an idea of where they stood at present.

Commenting on the survey, Indra J. Piliang from Kalla’s campaign team said he was growing more optimistic about the chances of the Golkar Party chairman getting elected, particularly since there was such a sizeable number of undecided voters.

Rizal Mallarangeng, from Yudhoyono’s campaign team, said he expected the outcome of the July 8 election to not differ by much from the survey’s result.

“This survey can help the candidates’ teams run better campaigns,” he said.

Maruarar Sirait, from Megawati’s campaign team, cast doubt on the legitimacy of the survey, saying the recent slew of similar studies were biased toward certain candidates.

“Most survey agencies are involved in politics, and I see most of them trying to direct public opinion to have the election won in a single round,” he said.

Maruarar added there was a “grand scenario” behind such surveys to bring about a single-round victory for the sake of efficiency.

The LSI’s Saiful was indignant at the “excessive” accusation.

“If you choose to blame the survey, then that’s simply finding a scapegoat,” he chided Maruarar.

“The [survey] result is supposed to be used as input to determine what you should be doing next.”

Maruarar shot back that the results of such surveys could be directed, depending on who funded them, adding the surveyors could have conducted the polling without even realizing they were being manipulated as part of the “grand scenario”.

Saiful replied he had tried to remain professional, despite the LSI being supported by “one of the campaign teams”, referring to the Yudhoyono camp, which he had previously admitted backed the LSI.

“The important thing is we don’t conduct surveys to present skewed results, as the donors would have liked,” he said.

Taufik challenges Chong Wei in men's singles final

The penultimate day of the six-day Indonesian Open badminton championship gave the hosts only Taufik Hidayat fighting for the title after the 2004 Olympic champion won his semifinal match at the Istora Sports Hall in Jakarta on Saturday night.

The fifth seed, who is looking to win the title for a record seventh time, defeated fellow Indonesian, fourth-seed Sony Dwi Kuncoro 21-17, 21-14.

However, it will be a potentially tough task in the final for Taufik with world's No. 1 Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia winning his semifinal battle against Chinese Chen Jin 21-15, 22-20.

Indonesia's hopes for another shot at a title crumbled after Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan, the world's No. 1 pair and top seeds in the tournament, lost to South Koreans Lee Yong-dae and Jung Jae-sung 21-19, 21-17. [The Jakarta Post]

NKRI HARGA MATI !

Malaysia Layangkan 13 Protes Soal Ambalat

The Final Reflection of Micro Teaching

“It’s spring! Start going through your garden (of life) and pulling out the weeds. Then you will make room for beautiful flowers to grow. Get rid of the bad and make room for the good to come in."
-Marion Licchiello-

Micro teaching class was a great class. There were many things I’ve learned from this class. At the beginning of this class, Mr.Prast taught us about theories in teaching, how to make good teaching performance, how to behave in front of the students, and how to make a good material. At the first, I did not know what the advantages of learning those theories. But, when I did my first class teaching, I realized that teaching was not as a simple as I thought. It was out of what I have imagined. My friends were so naughty [they acted like in their high school], time went so fast [30 minutes felt so fast], and I did not realize that I was laughing with the students too often. Finally, I thought that it was impossible to have a good teaching performance if our behavior and our material were not well prepared.

Choose an option to make your life begin
Months went by, but I still doubt my self if I would not able to teach well. I thought that I have no talent to teach. One day, my friends were busy looking for lecturer to practice teaching II with lower students [semester 2 students]. I also tried to find lecturer to practice teaching with lower students. And I met with Miss Siska [paragraph writing class]. I asked for her permission, and she told me that I have to teach in 100 minutes if I joined her class. At first, I thought that I would not be able to teach in 100 minutes. But, Miss Siska encouraged me and told me that I would be able to improve my teaching skill, it depended on how well you prepared the material. Finally, I took her class and the consequence was I have to prepare the material well. On the d-day, I was surprised that I could teach in 100 minutes. I was satisfied enough with my performance. It was a great experience!
Maybe, this quotation could describe what I was feeling:

I asked for Strength...
And God gave me Difficulties to overcome to strengthen me.
If God allowed us to go through our life
Without any obstacles,
...it would cripple us.
We would not be as strong as we could have been.

In the last meeting of the class, Mr. Prast gave some advices and showed us videos from Nugie and another was story about tea cup.
This is the video of Nugie’s song titled “Lentera Jiwa”

Finally, thanks to Mr. Prast who were helping and guiding me for this semester. Thanks to my friends. See you!

Live life without fear,
Confront all obstacles,
Be convinced that you can overcome them.
The World is a gift for you,
So that you, too, may spread your wings

REFLEKSI SETELAH OBSERVASI SEKOLAH

tetapi, justru disinilah tantanganya!
wish me luck in PPL 2!!

Personal Reflection [ week 13 ]

Finally, I practiced teaching for the second time in front of my friends and it means that there would be no more micro teaching class. :(
I would like to make some review about that day.
The first was Rina. She was a calm teacher and she did not too much talking. I thought that she have to be more interactive and attractive so that the students will pay more attention to her.
The second was me, hehe. I could only say that I have tried to give my best performance, but at the last, I still felt that I have to develop my teaching skill [smangat..smangat..].
The third was Nico. At the first section of the class, he showed a video about someone who was getting nervous during his presentation. I thought that it was a funny video to attract students' motivation. In his performance, Nico looked very enthusiast to deliver his material to the students. The fourth was Adit. He was confidence and looked matering the materials. It looked that he prepared the material well.
The Fifth was Olive. She was a calm teacher. She prepared the material well and the way she taught was understandable and easy to folow.
Yap!! finally, it was all that I can say for the last meeting of micro teaching!

Personal Reflection [week 12]

Humm, teaching in lower semester was not as spooky as I imagined!

Before taught in lower semester, I doubt myself whether I could teach well or not. The lecturer gave me 100 minutes to teach and I have no partner in practice teaching. At first, I do not believe myself that I could teach in 100 minutes. But, when I taught lower semester, 100 minutes was seemed very short. The keys were preparing the lesson plan with details of activities and using ice breaker to make the class’ atmosphere better. I thought that it was really nice experience!! I will miss it…

Oopss.. it was the third week of class teaching, the next week I have to practice teaching! I saw that some of my friends were very serious in their last class teaching. To be honest, I saw that their performances were decreasing rather than their first performance. I don’t know why, but it seemed that they lost their spirit in teaching. Maybe it caused of it was their last class teaching, so they wanted to finish it as soon as possible.

Back to me, I am not sure if I can teach well. I feel that I still have a lot of weaknesses. I think there are many things should be changed in me. Nevertheless, I am sure that I can give better performance in my second class teaching. There were many things I learned from my first class teaching. I have some strategies for my second class teaching such as playing a game to attract students’ motivation.

I hope I can give my best in my second class teaching. SEMANGAT!!!

19 April 2009

Personal Reflection [ week 11 ]

hmm.. what a nice class..

that Tuesday was the second week of micro teaching Test, on that day I was being an observer...
it was interesting to see my friends from behind the mirror... I can clearly feel the atmosphere in the class. Pronunciation, the teachers' faces during teaching, teachers' nervousness can be clearly seen..

from some of my friends' performances, I saw that they were many often doing something that actually was not important such as pawing their hair, laughing loudly, etc. from 5 teachers, I thought that there were only 2 or may be just 1 teacher who really prepared the material.
I was surprised with my friend who really prepared the material, she made a little book to be distributed to the students and I thought that it was very great idea, at least it showed me that she really-really tried to get well-performance in teaching.

mm.. I also saw some my friends made a worse performance [ I meant that their first performance was much better than their second performance].
It is also a homework for me! I have to make a better performance next two weeks..
go..go..go..!!

18 April 2009

Personal Reflection [week 10]

Ups.. because the bad weather, I got sick and I did not come to class =(

Personal Reflection [week 9]

Horaii!!!
There was no micro teaching class. I was happy because I got 'free time' for about 3 hours. I used my time for reviewing my lesson plan. I went to workstation at the library and made some changes in my lesson plan. I looked that my lesson plan was not good enough. I browsed for ESL/EFL website, tried to find games that could be applied in my lesson plan. But, it was difficult to find games which were suitable with my topic.
Then, I talked with my friend named nonok. I asked for her advice about games that can be used in listening class. She gave me a nice game named "whispering a sentence"! humm, I was interested with that game and finally, I would use that game.

21 March 2009

Personal Reflection [ Week 8 ]

"yakin pada dirimu sendiri!"
huff, maybe that is the best word to motivate me. I don't know what happen with me, but after I saw my friends performance, I thought that there were some things in me which should be improved. I got many positives comments from my friends and Mr. Prast. I remember when I practiced teaching class, it was not 'my best performance' i think.
These are 'my bad' when I practiced teaching:
  • I smile too often
  • I speak too often in my speaking class
  • I was too relax in teaching
From my friend's blog, Adria, I get comments like this:

" The way he taught was too relax and it confused the students a lot. He presented two topic at the same lesson. He taught the expression of sympathy and happiness. I thought those topics should have been separated in different meeting because before the students got the idea of the first topic, they had to face another topic. Moreover, the objectives were vague and doubtful, I was not sure whether the students achieved the indicators or not. "

In the next class teaching practice, I get topic : Listening for SMP grade 7. I will try to do my best on it. Comments from my friends will be guide for me to improve my teaching skill. In the next class teaching, I plan to do this:
  • make handout which is suitable with students' grade and make sure that the students can achieve the indicators.
  • because this is listening class, students will listen more.
  • not too often smiling.. =)
yeap! I think that's all for my reflection. comments and suggestions are hoped!

12 March 2009

Personal Reflection [ week 7 ]

In the 7th meeting of micro teaching class, I acted as a X grade student. From the beginning until the end of meeting, I just sit and watched my friends who practiced teaching. There were different characters between one and others who practiced teaching at that time. There were serious teacher, funny teacher and 'nervous' teacher. I liked to see Zita's and Adria's performances. They could explain their material well. From Zita, I learned that when we confidence and had mastered the material, we could explain the material smoothly. From Adria, I learned that when we used media for teaching, students' motivation to learn our material will increase. Students would be more comfortable and enjoyed the material given by teacher.
I think that's all I can write for my reflection.

11 March 2009

Reflection after practice teaching [ week 6 ]

Last week I have practiced teaching. I decided to teach "how to express happiness and how to express sympathy. I took those topic because I thought that those topic were easy to be taught to the students. This topic also fit with the standard competence and the basic competence which I should teach to. When I started teaching, actually I was nervous. I thought whether the students will pay attention to me or not. But, while I was teaching, I did not feel nervous anymore. First, I gave them song to be interpreted. The song's theme was happiness, I chose it because I would like to teach how to express happiness (I mean that the song will guide them to enter the material). During teaching, I felt that the most difficult was how to make the students pay attention to the material I thought. When I finished teaching, I got 3 written comments. Their comments were so constructive, thanks for that. From the first class teaching, I learned that teaching in conventional way (giving handout and explaining) will make the students bored. I have to have something different like using media namely video or something else. If I should teach this lesson again, I will have different way to explain the material. My first practice teaching is an unforgettable experience!!

Personal Reflection [ week 4 ]

The fourth meeting of micro teaching class was very interesting! I learned many things from it. At the first, Mr. Prast explained about Classroom management and General Tips. He taught how to make a best performance when you are practicing as a teacher. After that, he asked one of the students [volunteer] to come in front of class, to practice teaching. As usual, no body wanted to be a volunteer, so Mr. Prast made a lotery in order to get a "victim". He asked the date of that day, it was 17, 1+7=8 and he called the student in ordinal number 8 from above. And the "lucky" one was Nike. Everyone in the class shouted her, and she only smiled. Then, she came in front of the class. She started teaching by told us that she will teach Senior High School Students, so she wanted us to act like a senior high school students. First, she asked the students some general question like how are you? are you tired?etc. Suddenly, She asked me to come in front of class, maybe she saw that I was sleepy and leaning my head on the wall. In front of the class, she compared my height with my friend. She did it because her material was adjective comparison, and I think it was a good idea to present the material. From the set induction to set closure, she was very smooth. It looked that She had prepared it before. After she finished, the second "victim" was Cahyo. He looked very surprized when he got the turn. In confidence, he started teaching. The class was relax, too relax I think. The students already knew that Cahyo had not have prepared the material before, so we tried to ask Cahyo some "deadfall" questions.hehehe... He just only smiled when he cannot answer the students' questions. Actually, he was confidence enough. But, because he did not master the materials, he looked confused while teaching. From those two teaching practices, I learned that preparation is very important in teaching. Mastering the materials will make us confidence, and confidence will make us easier to present the materials effectively and relaxly.

Summary of Classroom Management and General Tips

Teaching is not as easy as we imagine. There are some tips you can use in teaching for your better teaching performance. Arrange the seating to help, it means that the position of students can help teacher to teach in classroom. Maybe, you can try to re-arrange the desks. But, if the desks are impossible to be changed, the teacher can divide students into groups. Working on group makes the students talk more with their friends and make the teacher easier to control the students. Stand up when you’re directing activity, as a teacher you should know when you have to sit and when you have to stand. If you think that students do not need you, you might sit. But, for most activities in the language classroom it is important that the students can see you, especially your mouth and eyes. Besides, standing means that you can see the students clearly and you can use your eyes and hands effectively.
Look at the students, by looking at the students, the students will feel that they are involved. Your eyes also can be used instead of your hands to indicate who should answer a question. Use your hands to encourage and direct students, a simple gesture can indicate who is going to answer a question, or which pair of students should read a dialogue. Simple gesture, for example holding up one hand and shaking it from side to side, can be a sign that something is wrong. Use the back of your hand to point, is less intimidating rather than point in the conventional way. Use pauses to punctuate what you say, you can make very short pauses before each change in the use of language from, for example, instruction to example. Pauses are an important feature of the way the teacher uses language in the classroom. Vary your voice, this does not mean speaking in a “funny voice”. Pauses, stress and changes of pitch when you change from example. For example comment to instruction, will mean it is much easier to follow what you say.
Keep your language to a minimum when students are doing something, there are several important implications: Do not interrupt students unnecessarily while they are preparing something. Do not dominate discussion yourself. Do not tell the students what they want to say. Do not use more language than is necessary to direct and control classroom. Don’t commentate, students never know whether what you are saying is important or not. Any commentary you give should be help to the students, and not used either to reassure yourself or simply to fill up silence. Don’t be afraid of silence, silence has a valuable part to play in language lessons. Constant language is tiring, students need time to think. Because the room is silent, it doesn’t mean nothing is happening. The secret is a balance between activity and quiet moments for reflection. Don’t be afraid of noise, effective language teaching means giving the students a chance to speak. The reason they make more noise is because there is more constructive activity going on! Use pair work to increase student talking time-even if it seems chaos, to gain the most effective pair work, you should: Divide the group into pairs yourself and make sure that all the students know who they are working with and which role they are to take, make sure everyone knows the instruction, go round, listen, and check that they are doing it, stop the activity when it is clear that everyone is finished, follow up the pair work with a demonstration/summary from one or more pairs, make a habit of it! Use group work to increase student talking time, as with pair work, some use of the native language is unimportant. It can be used as preparation for a text or topic. Be explicit, classroom instruction and explanation should be simple, precise, and explicit. The more explicit your instructions, the easier it is for the students to concentrate on the content, rather than the organization of activities. Don’t ask “do you understand?”, maybe you can use some questions like “so far so good?” or “are there any questions?”. Don’t go ‘round the class’ if individuals can prepare particular examples, the guiding principle is simple: if the student is more likely to be able to ‘switch off’ if you follow a pattern, then you choose individuals to answer, if the emphasis is on speed and students will remain involved because of the pace, it is often more efficient to do things in an ‘obvious’ way. Admit your ignorance, teacher is also a human, so if your student asks a question and you don’t know the answer, don’t afraid to say that you cannot answer the question. Don’t give them an ad hoc explanation which later turns out to be untrue. Consult colleagues, why waste a long time wrestling with a problem or wading through reference book if a colleague can tell you in a few moments? There is a saying a trouble shared is a trouble halved, it is as true for the language teacher as for nobody else! Consult students, asking them questions to know what our students feel like did you particularly enjoy today’s lesson? Why not? Etc. Demonstrate, rather than explain, new activities, demonstrating reduce the amount of unnecessary teacher language, is explicit, gives an idea of timing, and is generally more effective than any explanation. Exploit real events, stimulate students into using language naturally. For the example, when you are sneezing, say excuse me..or when one of students is birthday, say happy birthday or something else. Divide the blackboard, you can divide the blackboard in three parts. The largest part is used to present the main material, and the rest can be used to support your explanation. Use the overhead prjoector to control what students see, by writing on the transparancy, teacher can control what are the students doing. Machinery will not solve all your problems, computer, OHP, viewer are only equipments. They cannot work by themselves. The best result will be achieved if teachers can operate the machinery effectively and efficiently. Expand, don’t clutter, as a teacher we should prepare what we will teach about. It might be funny if we are standing in front of the class, with a lot of people are watching you but you do not mastering the material. Prepare yourself first before teaching. Mastering the material will make you confidence, confidence make you relax while teaching, and if you are relax, you can make the students comfortable with your class.

Personal Reflection [ week 3 ]

In the third meeting of micro teaching class. I learned to teach in group. It was easy but also difficult, I mean that the "teaching" itself was easy, but to make the students understood of what we had taught was difficult. Before I taught in a group, the day before I had already known that I should have good planning for my teaching materials. So, I practiced how to make good set induction, make good set closure, and make probing questions. The day when I taught in front of class, everything was changed. All things were making me confused. I was faced by how to make good time management, how to teach in such way that students could understand the materials, how to make students interested, etc.
Fuiihh,, Teaching was not as simple as I thought.
When I saw other group. I could see that some of teachers could teach relaxedly and could make their students interested with the material. Finally, when I finished my teaching, my friends gave me feedback. I guessed that I lack in voice volume and time management, and that were true! My friends said that I have good materials, well-arrangement, and spiritful. But, my voice was not clear enough so my students could not catch my materials, and I had bad teacher-students interaction. Huff, I kept in mind that it was only first trial. The next should be better!!

Personal Reflection [ week 2 ]

"Practice does not make perfect.
Only perfect practice makes perfect.."
- Vince Lombardi -

I am interested with the quote above because it really shows me that anything is possible to be achieved if we do a "perfect practice". In micro teaching week 2, I practiced peer to peer teaching with my classmate named Nico. The rules were simple, we acted as a teacher and a student, teacher taught in 15 minutes and student gave feedback. I was in the first turn, I taught Nico in 15 minutes and he gave me feedback. The feedback were surprising, he said that I was too "friendly" teacher and it made him put less-respect to me as a teacher, and I did many misspelling. Actually, I did not realized if I was too "friendly" and did many misspelling. While I was teaching, everything was just flow.... I enjoyed it (even I was very nervous.hehe). Maybe, may 'nervousness' made me did many misspelling. On the second turn, I acted as a student. I observed Nico while he's teaching. I made a list about his performance. When he had finished teaching, I tell him that he was too often made hand movement (e.g. touched his hair, nose, ears and neck) and his eyes often did not see me while teaching. He told me that he did not realized if he had done that.
After that, Mr. Prast gave his advices. He told that there are many things to be prepared before teaching. The main point is how will the students learn this? not how will I teach this? As a teacher, we should have good introduction (set induction) to create an atmosphere in such a way that the students' interest will be set upon the subject or topic they are going to learn. We should also know how to close the teaching-learning activities (set closure). There were some teaching strategies which we can do during teaching. For the example, we can move freely and relaxedly in order to avoid fear and to control the students' behaviour. Even we have good preparation, we could make any mistakes which were not realized like touched hair, nose, etc. We have to avoid them.
I learned a lot in micro teaching class week 2, I belive if I have good preparation, practicing, practicing and keep practicing, I will have good performance at teaching.

Baikkah Tidur Dalam Keadaan Lapar?

(The Epoch Times/Foe)

Personal Reflection [ week 1 ]

14.00 @ January 27, 2008.
It was the first day of my micro teaching class. I belonged to class F with Mr. Prast as my mentor (He's funny lecturer I think). The class was great, my classmate looked very friendly and I hope they would help me during the course. On the first meeting Mr. Prast explained about Micro Teaching in general. "Micro Teaching class was to provide the participants with an environment for practice-based teaching to encourage self-evaluative skills" (Mr.Prast said). I learned that in micro teaching class, students will be trained step-by-step to improve their teaching skill. I realized that I was in a half-way to be a teacher. Actually, I didn't like teaching. I thought that I was less-confidence and had bad performance in teaching. But, the good news was I believe that this class will help me to improve my confidence and teaching skill (hopefully).

From the class, I also learned about what makes good teacher. A good teacher is someone who :
  • masters the materials
  • is creative
  • is patient
  • is friendly
  • cares
  • is discipline
  • is flexible
  • is self confident
  • knows how to teach
  • is responsible
  • IT literate
I thought that step-by-step learning was a good way to train students in teaching. Start from peer to peer, group teaching and class teaching. I hope I can enjoy this class!
that's all of my personal reflection for week 1 . . . =)
